Bumpus Mills, Tenn. Proved to be an interesting,
remote marina. Bill, Steve and I were
the only folks in the marina all night!
There was no cell or internet service, so I felt a little cut off from
the world. (Bill’s AT and T phone did
work, yeah!) Let’s just say we went to
bed early for lack of anything else to do J My blog from yesterday could not be sent, due
to this technical difficulty. After a
fresh night’s sleep (no loud partiers here) I remembered a couple of important
items I forgot in the blog yesterday.
Bumpus Mills TN. A step back to a different time with wonderful people. |
Nancy liked Bumpus, but with no phone and no one else around, she was a little spooked. She was thinking too much about "Deliverence" |
Just before we left Green Turtle Bay, we
received “river info” on the radio. One
of the large locks on the Mississippi is closed until further notice. The rock wall leading up to the chamber of
the lock collapsed and the rocks fell into the channel. This means all North bound and South bound
barges, tugs and pleasure craft will have to stay put until it is fixed. Already in one day, they had at least sixty
barges just waiting! We talked to a
Looper at the marina who was the LAST boat out of the lock. He reported the large doors were not opening
properly, but he made it through! If
this would have happened to us, we might have been waiting at least two or more
weeks…yikes.
Also, I mentioned that Barkley Lake was formed
when they flooded thousands of acres. On
our GPS, as we go down the river, you can see old railroad beds, roadways and
submerged trees that are covered with water.
We have read that several towns were completely bought out and flooded
and are no more! Kind of interesting to
think what this looked like before it was a lake. (Can you tell I have lots of time to daydream
and think? J)
Barkley Lake Shore |
It was a foggy morning, so we didn’t leave
Bumpus Mills until 7:30. We are on our
way to Clarksville, Tenn and a brand new marina awaits us! Ahhh the comforts we grow to love so
well! Our next blog will be from
Nashville…talk soon!
